Covers taking the impression and then designing and fitting a custom device that adds bulk to the roof of the mouth, lowering its surface so that a tongue which can no longer reach it is able to make contact again. It is made for people whose tongue movement has been reduced, often after surgery on the tongue or after nerve damage, so that speech sounds clearer and food can be moved back for swallowing. The roof of the mouth itself is sound; the device is compensating for the tongue.
