This procedure transfers a segment of bone from the fibula, the thinner of the two lower leg bones, to reconstruct a defect somewhere else in the body, most often the jaw or another long bone after a tumor is removed or a severe injury. The surgeon keeps the bone's own blood vessels attached and reconnects them under a microscope at the new site so the transplanted bone stays alive and heals like natural bone.
