This is a surgical exploration of a wound that has penetrated into the chest wall, done to check for and repair damage to deeper structures such as muscle, blood vessels, or the lining around the lungs. It is typically performed after a stabbing, gunshot, or other sharp injury when the depth or extent of the injury is not clear from examination alone. The surgeon opens and inspects the wound track and closes it once bleeding is controlled and any injury addressed.
