A surgeon removes a thin layer of skin cancer tissue and immediately examines the edges of that tissue under a microscope while the patient waits, to check whether all the cancer has been removed. This first layer is taken from a sensitive area such as the face, hands, feet, or genitals, where preserving healthy tissue is especially important. If cancer cells remain at the edges, additional thin layers are removed and checked in the same visit.
