Surgically cleans a wound by cutting away dead or infected muscle and the tough covering over it, along with any dead skin and fat above. It is used for deep wounds such as pressure sores, diabetic ulcers and badly infected injuries, so that only healthy tissue is left and healing can begin. This covers a limited area of wound surface; larger wounds are accounted for by the extra area as well.
