Cuts away dead and infected skin, fat, muscle and the tough sheet of tissue beneath from the wall of the abdomen, to halt a rapidly spreading soft tissue infection. Everything that has lost its blood supply is removed until healthy bleeding tissue is reached. The deep layer may be closed at the same time or left for a later operation.
