Mitral Valve Implant Through A Chest Incision

Pennsylvania rates for HCPCS 0484T

A replacement mitral valve — the valve between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart — is delivered into position on a catheter, with the heart reached through a surgical opening in the chest wall rather than from a vessel in the groin. The diseased valve is not cut out; the new one is seated inside it and holds it aside, with X-ray and ultrasound pictures guiding the placement. It is offered to people with a badly leaking or narrowed mitral valve for whom a conventional valve operation would carry too much risk.
