Helps work up von Willebrand disease, the most common inherited bleeding disorder, in which the von Willebrand factor protein that helps platelets plug a wound is missing or faulty. This test measures the amount of von Willebrand propeptide, the piece cut away when the protein is made, in a blood plasma sample and reports it as a level. Its companion tests instead measure how the protein binds to other things.
