The small paired joints at the back of one level of the lower spine are replaced with an implant, after bone and tissue pressing on the nerves has been removed. The aim is to take pressure off the nerves while keeping the segment stable. X-ray imaging is used during the operation, and bone cement may be used to hold the implant.
