A doctor injects bone cement into both sides of the sacrum - the triangular bone at the base of the spine - through needles placed through the skin under imaging guidance. This stabilizes painful sacral fractures on both sides at once, often fractures caused by weakened bone such as from osteoporosis. Treating both sides in the same session can relieve pain from a fracture pattern that crosses the middle of the sacrum.
