An electronic implant is fitted to the eye to stimulate the cells that remain in the retina, the light-sensing layer lining the back of the eye. The jelly-like material filling the inside of the eye is removed during the operation so the device can be positioned. Working with an external camera, it can give some perception of light, movement and outlines to people who have lost sight from a retinal disease.
