An assessment of the psychological, behavioral and social factors affecting a physical illness — how someone copes with diabetes, chronic pain or heart disease, for example. It uses a focused interview, observation and structured questionnaires, and is aimed at managing a medical condition rather than treating a mental illness. This is the opening assessment, done before any treatment sessions.
