This covers a nuclear medicine test that measures vitamin B12 absorption both with and without the stomach protein intrinsic factor, combining both parts of the study. Comparing the two results helps doctors determine whether a B12 absorption problem is caused by a lack of intrinsic factor, such as in pernicious anemia, or by a different issue in the intestine. This combined approach can give a clearer answer than either part of the test alone.
