This is a treatment for a tumor or other localized abnormality on the retina in which a small radioactive source is surgically attached to the outside of the eye, directly over the affected area, then removed after the appropriate treatment time has passed. It delivers a concentrated dose of radiation directly to the tumor while limiting exposure to the rest of the body. It is most often used to treat certain tumors inside the eye, such as a melanoma of the eye.
