Removes the entire prostate gland along with the seminal vesicles through an incision made in the perineum, the area between the scrotum and the anus. During the same operation the surgeon also takes a limited sample of the lymph nodes in the pelvis so they can be checked for cancer spread. It is done under general or spinal anesthesia and requires a hospital stay and a urinary catheter for a period afterward.
