Open surgery to repair a hernia through the front of the abdominal wall, often at the site of an earlier surgical incision, where the bulging tissue can still be pushed back inside. It is the first repair carried out at that site. The surgeon opens the area, returns the contents to the abdomen, and closes the gap in the wall.
