Fluid Drainage From The Abdomen With Imaging Guidance

Washington, DC rates for HCPCS 49083

In this procedure, a physician inserts a needle or catheter into the abdominal cavity, guided by real-time imaging such as ultrasound, to drain excess fluid that has built up around the internal organs, a condition called ascites. The fluid can be removed to relieve pressure and discomfort, and a sample can be sent to a lab to help determine the underlying cause. Using imaging guidance helps the physician avoid nearby organs and place the needle safely and accurately.
