Surgery that places an inflatable cuff around the anal canal, connected to a small control pump and a fluid reservoir placed under the skin, to restore control over bowel movements. The cuff normally stays closed; squeezing the pump opens it when you need to go, and it reseals afterwards. It is offered for severe bowel incontinence when other treatments have failed.
