A flexible camera is passed through the anus into the lower portion of the large bowel, and a substance is injected into the wall just beneath the lining. This may be done to raise a flat growth clear of the deeper layers before it is removed, to tattoo a spot so it can be found again later, or to control bleeding. Only the lower part of the bowel is examined, not the entire colon.
