Rectum Removal With Pull-Through And Bowel Pouch

Major surgery that removes the rectum, the last section of the large bowel, working through both an incision in the abdomen and access from the area around the anus. The end of the remaining colon is then folded and joined to itself to build a pouch that serves as a new reservoir for stool, and that pouch is brought down and connected to the anal canal. A temporary opening on the abdomen is sometimes made in the same operation to divert stool while the new join heals.
