Colon Removal With an Internal Waste Pouch

Maryland rates for HCPCS 44151

Removes the entire large bowel while leaving the rectum in place, and builds a reservoir from the end of the small intestine that sits inside the abdomen with a small valved opening at the skin. Waste collects in the internal pouch and is emptied several times a day by passing a soft tube through the opening, so no external bag is worn. It is used for conditions such as ulcerative colitis or widespread polyps.
