A flexible camera is passed through the mouth to examine the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach, and a growth found there is removed with a wire loop tightened around its base. The loop cuts the growth free and can seal the site at the same time. The examination stops at the esophagus, and the tissue removed is sent to a laboratory.
