A needle is inserted into a bone, usually in the hip, to both withdraw a small liquid sample of bone marrow (aspiration) and remove a small core of solid marrow tissue (biopsy), typically done together in one procedure. The samples are examined in a lab to evaluate blood cell production and diagnose conditions affecting the bone marrow.
