Opens a narrowed carotid artery in the neck by threading a catheter to the blockage and leaving a small mesh tube, or stent, to hold the artery open. A filter is first placed beyond the narrowing to catch any debris knocked loose so it cannot travel to the brain. Widening the artery with a balloon and the X-ray imaging used to guide the work are part of the service.
