Cuts through the heel bone and shifts or reshapes it so the back of the foot lines up properly under the leg, then holds the new position with screws, staples or a plate while the bone heals. It is used when the heel is tilted inward or outward, often as one part of correcting a flat or high-arched foot. A period in a cast with no weight through the foot follows.
