Emergency surgery to relieve dangerous pressure buildup in the calf and shin by cutting open the tough tissue casing around the muscle group at the front and outer side of the lower leg, along with removal of any muscle or nerve tissue that has already died from the pressure. It is performed for compartment syndrome, a condition in which swelling inside the leg cuts off blood flow to the muscles and nerves. Only the front and outer muscle group is addressed here, rather than the muscles toward the back of the calf.
