Emergency surgery to relieve dangerous pressure buildup in the forearm by cutting open the tough tissue layer encasing the muscles, releasing both the muscle group that bends the wrist and fingers and the group that straightens them. Muscle or nerve tissue that has already died from the pressure is removed at the same time. This is done for compartment syndrome, a condition where swelling inside the arm cuts off blood flow to the muscles and nerves.
