A measurement added to a heart ultrasound that works out how much each part of the heart muscle stretches and shortens with every beat. It can pick up weakening of the muscle before the standard measurements change, which is why it is often used when treatments that can affect the heart are being monitored. It is billed in addition to the ultrasound itself.
