MRI-Guided Focused Ultrasound For Movement Disorders

Maine rates for HCPCS 0398T

Sound waves are focused through the intact skull onto a small target deep in the brain, heating and destroying a tiny volume of tissue in the circuit that drives abnormal movement. It is used for movement disorders in which shaking, stiffness or movements a person cannot control are no longer helped enough by medicine; a frame or navigation system holds the head still while MRI maps the target, aims the beams and watches the temperature at the treated spot. No incision is made and nothing is left inside the head.
