During a knee replacement, a sensor is placed between the new joint surfaces to measure how evenly load and pressure are shared as the knee is bent and straightened. The surgeon uses the readings to fine-tune the balance of the surrounding ligaments and the position of the implant. It is billed in addition to the knee replacement itself.
