The patient swallows a capsule containing a small camera, which travels through the digestive tract and photographs the lining of the colon as it passes. The images are downloaded afterwards and reviewed by a doctor, who reports on what the lining shows. Bowel preparation beforehand is needed, as it is for a standard colonoscopy.
