Repair of the mitral valve — the valve between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart — from the inside, using a thin tube passed up a vein instead of opening the chest. The first repair device is carried up on that tube and fixed to the valve so it closes more tightly and leaks less, with X-ray and ultrasound pictures guiding every step. The patient's own valve is repaired and left in place rather than being cut out and replaced.
