A needle-like probe is passed through the skin into a tumor in the lung under imaging guidance, and its tip is cooled to freezing temperatures to destroy the tumor tissue. Tumor that has grown into the lining of the lung or the chest wall can be treated in the same session. It is an alternative to removing the tumor surgically.
