Vagus Nerve Blocking Implant for Obesity

South Dakota rates for HCPCS 0312T

Through keyhole surgery in the abdomen, stimulator leads are placed on the vagus nerve trunks where the food pipe meets the stomach, and a pulse generator is implanted and programd. Signals sent along the leads interrupt nerve traffic between the stomach and the brain, which reduces appetite. It is used as a treatment for severe obesity.
