Open surgery to repair a moderate number of broken ribs on one side of the chest. Each fracture is exposed, the bone ends are brought back into line and a plate is screwed across them so the rib holds its shape while it heals. It is used when several ribs on the same side are badly displaced or when the chest wall has become unstable.
