Open surgery to repair a small number of broken ribs on one side of the chest. The surgeon opens the chest wall over the fractures, brings the bone ends back into line and fastens them with plates and screws so they stay lined up while they heal. It is used when the broken ends are badly out of place, when a loose segment of chest wall moves with each breath, or when the pain stops someone from breathing deeply.
