Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Root Injection, Lower Spine

Numbing medicine and/or steroid is injected next to a spinal nerve where it leaves the spine in the lower back or the sacrum, into the space just outside the covering of the spinal cord. Ultrasound is used to see the structures and steer the needle. It is done to calm pain, tingling or weakness traveling into the buttock or leg, and covers one level of the spine.
