Fusion of the lowest disc space in the lower back, reached through a small incision beside the tailbone rather than through the abdomen or through the back muscles. The worn disc is cleared out along that narrow channel and bone graft is packed in so the two vertebrae grow together, with X-ray guidance used throughout and fixation hardware placed to hold the segment still while the fusion heals.
