Small clear crescent-shaped inserts are placed inside the layers of the cornea, the clear window at the front of the eye, through a narrow channel made in the tissue. They flatten and reshape a cornea that has become irregular or cone-shaped, which can steady the vision and make contact lenses fit better. The eye is numbed with drops, and the inserts can be exchanged or taken out later.
