Anesthesia care for surgery on the heart, the sac around it, or the great vessels of the chest, carried out with a heart-lung machine that takes over pumping and oxygenating the blood while the heart is still. It applies to patients past their first year of life. The anesthesia team keeps the patient unconscious and pain-free and manages breathing and circulation throughout; the surgeon's work is charged separately.
